Aggressive & Challenging Behaviors in Children……………………………………………….SP2000

Children’s development can often be marked by intense behavioral reactions. This workshop will help participants identify the difference between typical or normal disruptive behaviors in children to those  behaviors that are clinically significant and    warrant intervention. This includes an understanding of children’s behavioral, emotional, social, and cognitive development.  Participants will learn how disruptive and aggressive behaviors are defined and diagnosed in children. Children who are unable to manage and regulate their emotions and behavior in age-appropriate ways are less likely to be    successful in school. In order to maximize students’ academic achievement in meeting Common Core State Standards, students need assistance in regulating themselves. This professional   development workshop will help teachers understand the impact of emotional and behavioral problems on academic performance and when these problems warrant a clinical referral. Teachers will learn classroom behavioral techniques to reduce emotional and behavioral disruptions and increase students’ academic  performance.

Promoting Social Emotional Learning in the Classroom………………………………….……SP2004

Research has consistently shown that students who develop     age-appropriate social emotional competence skills have better      academic outcomes, more positive social relationships, and are less likely to experience mental health problems. These significant and positive outcomes have led to the inclusion of social-emotional learning (SEL) as distinct state learning standards in Illinois. This professional development will help teachers understand the connection between SEL and academic curricula.  Teachers will learn strategies and techniques for how to promote SEL in primary (K-3) classrooms that are culturally and contextually appropriate and are linked to Common Core  Standards.
